Neil Sedaka
(March 13, 1939 – February 27, 2026)
was an American singer,
songwriter,
and pianist.
Beginning his
music career
in 1957,
he sold millions
of records worldwide
and wrote
or co-wrote
over 500 songs
for himself
and other artists,
collaborating mostly
with lyricists
Howard "Howie" Greenfield
and
Phil Cody.
After a short-lived tenure
as a founding member
of the doo-wop group
the Tokens,
Sedaka achieved
a string of hit singles
over the late 1950s
and early 1960s,
including
"Oh! Carol"
(1959),
"Calendar Girl"
(1960),
"Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen"
(1961),
and
"Breaking Up Is Hard to Do"
(1962).
His popularity declined
by the mid-1960s,
but was revived in
the mid-1970s,
solidified by the
1975 US Billboard
Hot 100 number ones
"Laughter in the Rain"
and
"Bad Blood".
Sedaka maintained a
successful career as
a songwriter,
penning hits for
other artists including
"Stupid Cupid"
(Connie Francis),
"(Is This the Way to) Amarillo"
(Tony Christie),
and
"Love Will Keep Us Together"
(Captain & Tennille).
He was inducted into
the Songwriters
Hall of Fame
in 1983
and continued
to perform,
mounting
mini-concerts
on social media
during the
COVID-19
pandemic.

Samuel Cooke
(January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964)
was an American
Soul singer
and songwriter.
Considered one
of the most influential
soul artists
of all time,
Cooke is commonly
referred to as the
"King of Soul"
for his distinctive vocals,
pioneering contributions
to the genre,
and significance in
popular music.
During his eight-year career,
Cooke released
29 singles
that charted in
the Top 40
of the
Billboard Hot 100 chart,
as well as
20 singles
in the Top 10 of
Billboard's
Black Singles chart.
In 1964,
he was shot and killed
by the manager
of a motel in
Los Angeles.
After an inquest
and investigation,
the courts ruled
Cooke's death
to be a
justifiable homicide.
His family has
since questioned
the circumstances
of his death.
In 2015,
Cooke was ranked
number 28
in Billboard magazine's
list of the
"35 Greatest
R&B Artists of All Time".

Freddie King
(born Fred King)
(September 3, 1934 – December 28, 1976),
also billed as
Freddy King,
was an
American blues guitarist,
singer and songwriter.
He is considered one
of the
"Three Kings of the Blues Guitar"
along with
Albert King
and
B. B. King,
none of whom were related
Known for his soulful
and powerful voice
and distinctive
guitar playing,
King had a
major influence on
electric blues music
and on many
later blues guitarists.
